Returning to this part of the world for the first time in six years, Swedish rock legends Opeth have sparked excitement with the announcement of seven massive concerts spanning Australia and New Zealand in November 2025.
Aficionados of one of Northern Europe’s most influential heavy metal groups can look forward to sets lasting for more than two hours, and featuring tracks from the band’s 14th studio album released just months ago, The last WILL and TESTAMENT.
The present iteration of Opeth consists of bass guitarist Martin Mendez, drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, vocalist and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt, keyboardist and singer Joakim Svalberg, and guitarist and vocalist Fredrik Åkesson.
Åkerfeldt is the sole current member to have contributed to all Opeth releases; he has been with the band since 1990, when David Isberg formed the group with friends from Täby. Isberg departed Opeth in 1992, citing “creative differences”, with Åkerfeldt subsequently taking over his duties as lead singer.
The fabled progressive metal purveyors will take to the stage at Auckland Town Hall’s Great Hall on Friday 14th November – and such has been the surging demand from local fans, tickets have become scarce already. Their tour Down Under will then take them to Sydney, Brisbane, St Kilda, Adelaide, and Perth in the second half of the month.

It has been quite the journey over the decades since Opeth declared themselves the “most evil band in the world” during the 1990s. That epithet befitted an act with such strong roots in occult-saturated, doomy death metal, as exhibited by their first LP, 1995’s Orchid, and its 1996 follow-up, Morningrise.
However, by the time of 1998’s internationally praised My Arms, Your Hearse, Opeth were already incorporating progressive elements into their music. It is fair to say the band’s sonic palette has continued to broaden ever since then.
Going from strength to strength in both artistic and commercial terms through the releases of such acclaimed studio efforts as Still Life (1999), Blackwater Park (2001), Ghost Reveries (2005), and Heritage (2011), the band built a global stature that has lingered through to the 2020s, albeit while sometimes upsetting death metal purists along the way.
The 2024 concept album The last WILL and TESTAMENT, though, was celebrated by many fans as a return to Opeth’s roots. It proved one of the group’s heaviest albums in decades, with its growled vocals and screams showing the band – for all its evolution and experimentation through the years – has never surrendered its death metal chops.
