My Chemical Romance to Headline
Influenced by the September 11 attacks in America, Gerard Way decided to form a band in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey. The band consisted of Gerard Way on lead vocals, Matt Pelissier on drums, later replaced by Bob Bryar, Mikey Way on bass guitar and Ray Toro as the guitarist. Their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was produced by the lead singer of Thursday, Geoff Rickley, a fellow New Jersyian, it was dark, emotional and rock orientated. Through playing live shows in New Jersey with this album they gathered attention and signed a proper record deal and begun work on Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge which went platinum and shot them to the mainstream.
Their third album in 2006, Welcome To The Black Parade, a concept album, did commercially well, going triple platinum in both the US and the UK and was well-loved by fans around the world. They cited the likes of Queen and Pink Floyd and as their inspiration, the album took on a different kind of sound for the group and is classed as a rock opera. Dan Martin from NME summed it up as similar to Green Day's American Idiot which really challenged the ideas people had about the group.
Their last album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys was released in 2010 and took on a narrative of a post-apocalyptic world. The lead up for their reunion show has proven the group is still fond of using dramatics, interludes, theatre, and a performative on stage presence. The band line up has barely changed over the band's career with a full line up Gerard, Mikey, Frank, and Ray set to perform in March, less a permanent drummer. They haven't performed in New Zealand since the now disestablished Big Day Out in 2013.
