The countdown is on, Parkway Drive IRE New Zealand Tour is right around the corner; 7pm Wednesday at the Logan Campbell Centre a couple thousand will gather to get rowdy. The metal heavy weights will be supported by equally talented fellow-Aussie deathcore band Thy Art is Murder, not to mention hugely anticipated U.S bands Memphis May Fire and The Word Alive.
Parkway Drive says “Ire represented massive progress for the band creatively, delivering a heavier sound with more depth and more melodic resonance than anything they’ve done in the past”.
Singer Winston McCall explains “If this isn’t the album that can go further than anything we thought was possible with this band and this type of music, that’s fine, but we can’t go back from this as far as we’re concerned.”
Ire is the fifth studio album (available now), and comes 3 years later since the launch of Atlas in 2012. The album comes a long way since their first release Killing with a Smile in 2005. It’s been a decade, and the sound has morphed into something quite new - whilst keeping ambient of their original sound.
There is definitely some new influences seeping into the new record; In a recent interview Winston said that some of the songs from the album were influenced by Rage Against the Machine. I’ve got to admit that’s exactly thought when when I watched their latest music video Crushed earlier last month. I wouldn’t go anywhere close to saying they have copied RATM, if anything it’s a positive groove that breaks the stereotypical chuga chuga that metalcore has become.
